ARTIST BIO

Nikolay Zapolnov is an interdisciplinary artist, experimental photographer, and Artist–Engineer based in Helsinki, Finland.
Drawing on a background in software and systems engineering, he develops artistic projects that unite photography, technology, curatorial practice, and collaborative research. His work explores identity, perception, embodiment, and the relationship between people, space, and visual experience.
Working across digital and analogue photography, Zapolnov creates carefully constructed visual environments where light, movement, atmosphere, and the human body become essential elements of the artistic language. His projects frequently evolve through collaborations with performers, visual artists, designers, and creative communities.
Alongside his artistic practice, he founded Nordic Curatorial Platform, Art Chaos Gallery, and Alternative Visual Studio—initiatives that support international exhibitions, interdisciplinary collaboration, and new approaches to presenting contemporary art in both physical and digital formats.
His practice is driven by the belief that photography is not only a medium of representation but also a space for dialogue, participation, and transformation.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Main Theme
My work investigates the relationship between identity and perception.
I am interested in the moments when familiar ways of seeing begin to shift—when emotion, memory, movement, and presence reveal aspects of ourselves that often remain unnoticed.
Photography, for me, is not a document of reality but a way of questioning it.
Artistic Approach
My background in engineering has shaped the way I think about artistic practice.
Every project begins with creating a framework: a concept, a visual rhythm, a spatial environment, and a set of conditions in which authentic interaction can emerge. Within this structure I leave room for intuition, improvisation, and the unexpected.
Rather than directing people to perform, I create situations where genuine moments can unfold naturally.
Materials & Process
Photography remains the core of my practice.
I work with both digital and analogue photography and frequently combine the medium with performance, moving image, installation, sound, and site-specific interventions.
The body plays a central role in my work—not as an object to be observed, but as a living medium through which emotion, memory, vulnerability, and transformation become visible.
Every project develops differently, shaped by dialogue between people, place, and process.
AWAKENING
For me, awakening begins with attention.
It is the quiet moment when we recognise something that has always existed within us but has not yet been seen.
Through photography I seek to create encounters between external appearance and inner experience, inviting viewers to pause, observe, and reconsider how we perceive ourselves and others.
Within AWAKENING, photography becomes an open conversation about presence, identity, and transformation.

CURATOR NOTE

It is especially inspiring to witness the creative transformation of Nikolay Zapolnov. His journey is one from the world of information technology and game development—where logic, structure, and precision prevail—to the language of fine art photography, where intuition, sensitivity, and emotional presence become essential.
Such a transition is rarely simple. It is a movement from carefully constructed algorithms to trusting one’s own vision, from control to perception. In my view, Nikolay heard that inner calling and chose to follow it.
Today, the human body—particularly the expressive language of the female form—has become central to his artistic exploration. Light, natural elements, smoke, textures, and space are not merely visual tools but an expressive vocabulary through which each image is shaped. What I find especially compelling is his desire to reveal not external beauty, but the moment of inner awakening and transformation.
Observing his work, I see a journey from the rigid architecture of the digital world toward the soft, organic, and deeply expressive language of photography. It is within this transition—from structure to freedom—that I believe the true story of the artist unfolds.
