Mixed Media Artist | Creator of Sculptural Mythologies
БИОГРАФИЯ ХУДОЖНИКА
Julia Harmange is a Finland-based contemporary mixed media artist whose practice explores the relationship between image, material, and imagination. Since 2020, she has developed a distinctive artistic language that combines sculptural relief, artistic decoupage, gilding, patination, and AI-enhanced imagery into richly textured works that exist between painting and sculpture.
Working with modeling compounds, acrylics, decorative finishes, and layered surfaces, Harmange transforms photographs into tactile compositions where ornament, symbolism, and architectural textures become an integral part of the narrative. Her works merge handcrafted traditions with contemporary digital tools, creating a visual language that is both timeless and unmistakably contemporary.
Alongside her studio practice, Julia collaborates with galleries, restaurants, and cultural venues throughout the Helsinki metropolitan area, bringing contemporary art into both exhibition and social spaces. She also leads painting-and-wine workshops that encourage creative participation and make mixed media art accessible to broader audiences.
Her works have been exhibited at Ravintola Backas, Ibi’s Café, Shot Bar Helsinki, Gallery Hopeinen Sivellin, and as part of international curatorial projects. Through her evolving practice, Julia Harmange continues to investigate new possibilities at the meeting point of material craftsmanship, mythology, and contemporary visual culture.
ТВОРЧЕСКОЕ ЗАЯВЛЕНИЕ
Reality has always contained more stories than we allow ourselves to see.
My work explores the space where reality, memory, and imagination meet. I transform familiar images into tactile worlds where portraits, mythology, ornament, and relief become part of a single visual language. Rather than depicting reality, I reconstruct it - allowing ordinary people, places, and moments to evolve into timeless symbolic narratives.
I am fascinated by the dialogue between the flat photographic image and the sculptural surface. Through layers of relief, artistic decoupage, gilding, patination, and AI-enhanced imagery, I create compositions in which texture becomes more than a material - it becomes a storyteller. The physical surface carries memory, while the image invites viewers into imagined worlds that feel both familiar and dreamlike.
My artistic process is intentionally slow and handcrafted. Every artwork develops through multiple layers of modeling compounds, textures, acrylic painting, metallic finishes, and carefully integrated imagery. AI is not a substitute for artistic creation, but one of many creative tools that allows me to reinterpret reality while preserving the emotional presence of the human subject.
With quiet humor and poetic imagination, I enjoy rethinking everyday stories. Real people may become mythical heroes, historical figures, or characters from imagined worlds. These transformations are not escapes from reality but invitations to look at it differently, discovering wonder within the ordinary.
In an age dominated by endless digital images, I believe materiality has become increasingly meaningful. Texture invites touch, relief slows perception, and handcrafted surfaces encourage contemplation. My works ask viewers to move beyond the image itself and experience art as something physical, immersive, and emotionally resonant.
Ultimately, my practice is an invitation to rediscover mythology - not as something belonging to the past, but as a living language through which we continue to understand ourselves.
“I create worlds at the intersection of myth and reality.”
